At the 5th World Symposium on Climate Change Adaptation, Florencia Almansi from IIED-AL presented the article “Locally led adaptation in informal settlements in Argentina,” a joint work by IIED-AL and UNU-EHS (Guerra, F., Hardoy, J., Almansi, F., and Sandholz, S.).

The symposium, held as a side event to the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP 30) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), took place on November 11 and 12, 2025, in Florianópolis, Brazil.

The interdisciplinary forum was organized by the International Climate Change Information and Research Programme (ICCIRP) in cooperation with the University of Southern Santa Catarina (UNISUL), with support from Haw Hamburg - Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, and UNISUL’s Center for Sustainable Development (GREENS). At the event, participants from different areas exchanged ideas and lessons learned on the how of implementing local climate adaptation projects.

The joint article by UNU-EHS and IIED-AL examines two locally led adaptation experiences in Argentina: Barrio 20 in Buenos Aires and Barrio Moreno in Rosario. Both cases were developed under the Transformative Urban Coalitions (TUC) project, using inclusive approaches implemented jointly with the communities to strengthen low-income neighborhoods’ resilience to climate change. These experiences offer valuable lessons that can be replicated.

All symposium presentations will be included in the book Adapting the World to a Changing Climate. The organizers also selected our article, along with the best papers, for publication in a special issue of the International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management. This will allow the Argentine TUC cases to gain greater international visibility and serve as a reference for other countries.
